LPO Soundworks is a platform for creative and talented artists aged 14-19, uniting teenage musicians with young experts from other art forms
Working side-by-side with LPO musicians, composers and professionals from across the arts, LPO Soundworks participants refine their skills, push their creative ideas to the limit, and learn new ways of working from other sectors, as well as gaining an insight into professional music development and performance.
“The music was collectively written and performed with zeal. Deep, important work.”Seen and Heard International, review of Music & Film performance, April 2017
The LPO Soundworks programme includes Spotlight Days, which offer an intensive focus on composing for specific art forms through hands-on activities, and a Creative Week, where participants devise a collaborative cross-arts performance piece, ultimately showcased in a public event. The LPO recruits the LPO Soundworks music ensemble, and works with partner organisations who recruit young people from their own arts specialism. All projects take place during school holidays.
Alongside this, our online space The Studio offers young composers insights and creative resources inspired by our live LPO Soundworks projects.

Past LPO Soundworks Projects:
Spotlight Day: Music & Film
Sunday 26 November 2017 at East Sussex Music
An intensive day finding out about music and film at our first residency at East Sussex Music. Young musicians met a professional film composer, took part in a foley workshop and split into groups to create soundtracks for short film extracts, working first with the mood of the film, and then against it, to see what effect music has on the audience.
Spotlight Day: Music & Theatre
Thursday 27 July 2017
What can live music bring to the drama, characters and emotions of a play? With professional insights from composers and actors, young musicians created music for scenes from Shakespeare and more modern plays, exploring how music can affect the meaning of the text, how the text influences the creation of the music, and practical considerations when composing for live theatre.
Creative Week: Music & Film
In this year’s Creative Week, LPO Soundworks musicians devised music for short films by talented young filmmakers from the BFI Future Film Academy, which they performed at a special screening in London’s Southbank Centre on 8 April. Along the way they met a professional film composer to find out about what it's like in the business, and took part in hands-on excercises in foley (sound effects) and the different effect music can have on moving image.
Spotlight Day: Music & Dance
Monday 24 October 2016
A mixture of discussion, professional insights and hands-on composition activities, alongside dancers from Quicksilver, Rambert’s youth dance company.
To find out more about our last LPO Soundworks Creative Week in 2016, where young musicians and dancers collaborated on a piece inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth, read our Soundworks Diaries.
