Creative Classrooms Connect
Welcome to Creative Classrooms Connect, a space for Key Stage 2 teachers to access, share and respond to music-making resources created by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, primary teachers and other experts in music education. We’ll be regularly uploading ideas for classroom music activities, with which we invite teachers to interact.
In this festive lesson, we use the cumulative structure of the popular song The Twelve Days of Christmas to create a class performance on percussion instruments, with some ideas for taking it further.
This resource is designed to help you and your class use Gustav Holst’s The Planets suite in the classroom. We have found that by working in a creative, hands-on way children can begin to understand and enjoy the repertoire the London Philharmonic Orchestra performs and this in turn can enliven your music lessons. We’ve outlined the background to the piece and how to listen it. We've also included a creative project that shows you how to create your own version of the most famous section – Mars.
In these two projects we explore Tchaikovsky’s famous 1812 Overture in different ways. Project 1 focuses on composition inspired by Tchaikovsky, in which two tunes from the piece are used to create a class battle of the melodies. In Project 2 we invite teachers to recreate the victorious finale of the piece with your class, using classroom percussion, any instruments children already play, and body percussion.
